As KEVIN.MURPHY commemorates 20 years as a brand, they found themselves reflecting on everything they’ve accomplished over the decades. Seeing where they’ve been with a new perspective for the future, they take in the iconic moments that started it all — from the beach to the runway, session styling, and in the salon. In case you didn’t know, KEVIN.MURPHY all started out of need — a need for styling products that would perform, and from there it developed into a global beauty brand that puts fashion, performance, and environment above all else. How It All Started

Founded by renowned stylist Kevin Murphy, he was at the forefront of the fashion, runway, editorial and film industries and had become one of the most sought-after session stylists in the world. It was then he noticed that to recreate the looks and trends he wanted to create on set, he needed specific products that weren’t yet on the market.

Mixing products like body lotion with setting lotion, is how the brand was born drawing on the same philosophies as skincare. Remaining true to his Australian heritage and fashion-forward beginnings, Kevin sought out to create products with a conscience that were both kind to hair and the environment. In doing so, he also bridged the gap between the runway and the every day with products that performed.

“Our “skincare for your hair” philosophy first began when I was working on photo shoots in the early 90’s. All the products at the time were really designed for straightened flatter hairstyles. 

I felt they made the hair heavy and greasy, and you could only use the tiniest bit and only put it on the ends. I really wanted to change the characteristics of the hair, so I needed to be able to put product all through the hair. I began looking at skincare and the way it absorbed, I started mixing body lotion with hair spray, I used toner to thin out my gel to make it dry faster, I began to mix eyeshadow and gel and lotions to make things work quicker and to give the hair an iridescent shine you might recognise. A product that used this idea was HAIR.RESORT, the precursor to HAIR.RESORT SPRAY. It was born from this,” reminisces Murphy.

20 Years Later

Now, KEVIN.MURPHY is taking a nostalgic walk down memory lane to celebrate the iconic styles and the innovative products that created it all. Texture and volume continue to command the style space and as we enter a new era, we’re spotlighting two of our icons: HAIR.RESORT.SPRAY and ANTI.GRAVITY.SPRAY — because they’re a big (and beachy) reason of why we are where we are today.
